I am sending home a Reading and Math Facts Log with your child. I would like your child to read for a minimum of 15 minutes each night, 5 nights a week. I know evenings can be hectic with activities and commitments, so students can double up on another night if need be. They should record their books and minutes on their Reading Log. Reading Logs are due every Monday, I have included the due date at the top of each one. They can simply rip the top sheet off and turn it in (there is no need to bring the folder to school).
Your child will begin to gain confidence as a reader and develop reading fluency by reading a variety of different ways, but always be sure to alternate between them. Young readers become better readers by listening to good readers read and by reading themselves. You may choose to:
Read to your child while he/she listens
Read with your child (alternating who reads)
Listen to him/her read to you
Always be sure to ask your child questions about the book before, during, and after reading to ensure they have an understanding of what they are reading.
I would also like your child to practice their math facts, addition and subtraction to 20, for 15 minutes every night. It is very important that students have these facts mastered before entering the 3rd grade. It will help them tremendously if they don't have to rely on their fingers as we begin to work with double digit numbers. They can practice with flashcards or on a math app.
Have fun reading together! This is the year when you will see your little one make the most progress towards becoming a fluent reader!
